In the States, Ebony is a popular name among African-Americans, not as much as berfoe, I think it was popularized by an African-American woman's magazine of the same name. I have loved the name Indiana ever since I read Georges Sand's Indiana in highschool. I think it would actually make a great American name. Its interesting that it is popular in Australia, I wonder why.I have always loved Bronte.I think the reason the U.S. is so distinctive is probably because we have so many immigrant groups that contribute to the popularity of names. For instance, we have such a large established Italian-American community that I believe that they have contributed to the popularity of such names as Gianna, Isabella, Gabriella etc, not to mention, our Irish immigrants started using patriotic names vs actual Gaelic names, such as Erin and Kelly. I don't know why the Irish-Americans started using these types of names. Many Irish-Americans also use traditional Gaelic names as well. And I believe the popularity of Emma and Ella has much to do with our large German and Scandinavian-American population. Emma was so popular among German and Scandinavian immigrants at the turn of the century and most of the Emmas I have met here were named for a grandmother or great-grandmother. Asha is not unheard of in the States, it is a Polish diminutive form of Joanna, though spelled Asia, but it is never ever used as an independent given name. We also have a large Indian community, but for whatever reason, Asha isn't as common among Indian-Americans as it is among other diasporic Indian groups.Very interesting!
